"When Words Leave Scars: Why Bullying Must End and How We’re Fighting Back"

My Thoughts on Bullying

I’ve been thinking a lot about bullying recently and not just as an issue that happens in schools, but as something that can shape a person for life. It is something that may be happening in everyday life regardless of age, sex or creed.

For some it’s a childhood memory they wish they could forget, for others, it’s happening right now in classrooms, workplaces or even online. While we often think of bullying as something that ends when we grow up the truth is the impact lingers. The words, the looks or the isolation can leave scars you can’t always see.

What People Don’t See

It’s not always about the obvious signs. Sometimes it’s:

  • The child who goes quiet when they used to be the loudest in the room.
  • The teenager who avoids photos because they’ve started believing the names they’re called.
  • The adult who still feels unworthy years later because those old voices never left.

Bullying isn’t “banter.” It’s not “just kids being kids.” It’s something that steals confidence, robs joy and convinces people they are less than they really are.

Why I’m Speaking Up Now

This Month I’m proud to be launching my Forward Focus project alongside Kindness Counts UK.

As a photographer I know the power of being seen. A portrait is more than just a picture, it’s proof of identity. It’s a reminder that you matter.

Through this project I’ll be offering photography and creative workshops to young people and adults who’ve experienced bullying. The aim is simple: to help people reconnect with who they are and not who others tried to tell them they are.

When you’ve been bullied, sometimes the hardest thing is to believe in yourself again. Forward Focus is about giving that belief back.

A Personal Message

If you’re reading this and you’ve been bullied, whether in the past or right now, please hear me:

  • You are not broken.
  • You are not defined by the cruel things that were said to you.
  • You are not alone.

If you ever find yourself as a bystander please don’t stay silent. You never know how much it could mean for someone to hear a single voice standing up for them.

What Comes Next

Through Forward Focus and Kindness Counts UK, we’ll be:

  • Running creative workshops to rebuild confidence.
  • Offering photo sessions that help people see themselves in a new light.
  • Sharing real stories of survival and hope.
  • Creating resources for schools and communities that show kindness is always the stronger choice.

This isn’t about only raising awareness. It’s about taking action.

Closing

I believe kindness is powerful. It’s not soft and it’s not naïve. In a world where cruelty is often casual, kindness is an act of strength. It's an act of taking back what has been taken away from you, your friends or your family members.

This September I want us to stand together and make it clear: bullying doesn’t get the last word.

Forward Focus is my way of helping people rebuild one story, one portrait, one act of kindness at a time.

Kindness does count and with your help and a little bit of kindness to each other will win.
